Emery and Mika are the stars on one of the nation's top teams

Coach Quincy Lewis and his team at Lone Peak High are accustomed to traveling long distances now. Over the past two seasons, Lewis's squad has emerged as one of the top high school basketball teams in the nation and seems to always emerge as one of the best teams at whatever tournament they attend.

This year, it's guard Nick Emery and center Eric Mika that anchor Lewis's all-star cast and they'll continue their time together when they begin playing for BYU next season. A lightning quick guard with exceptionally good ballhandling skills, Emery recently broke the Lone Peak scoring record in a victory over American Fork.

The sleeved, four-star point guard is recognized as one of the top guards in the nation, and he has been superb thus far in his senior season. Emery has not only operated as an excellent facilitator, but has been deadly from three-point range as well.

One of the best demonstrations of Emery's versatility was in the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. Taking on the two-time defending California state champions Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.), the Knights took an early 7-0 lead en route to an 81-46 win. The blowout was unexpected, but Emery not only scored 20 points, but grabbed five rebounds, dished three assists, snagged three steals, and helped open up the offense for a career day for senior Connor Toolson, who scored a team-high 22 points.

Mika is the brawn of the operation. A burly 6-foot-8 center, Mika could feasibly play when he arrives on the BYU campus next season. This year, he has anchored the post for the Knights and has consistently put up double-doubles. Mika added a bit of flair to his resume while the team was in Springfield when he won the dunk contest.

The two star teammates should lead Lone Peak to its third consecutive 5A state championship barring an upset, but it's abundantly clear that basketball fans have not seen the last of these two teammates.
