NEW YORK (AP) -- ESPN's telecast of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals was the network's most-viewed and highest-rated NHL contest in nearly three years and its best finals opener ever.

The Carolina Hurricanes' 3-2 overtime victory Tuesday night over the Detroit Red Wings averaged 2,467,173 households and a 2.85 rating.

It was the most-watched hockey game on ESPN since June 19, 1999, when the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup in triple overtime by beating Buffalo.

ESPN will also show Game 2 of the finals on Thursday night before ABC takes over for the remainder of the best-of-seven series.
