Bitter end Brunette's PP goal in first ends Giguere's shutout streakPosted: Friday May 16, 2003 11:27 PMUpdated: Saturday May 17, 2003 12:11 AM
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Anaheim's Jean-Sebastien Giguere had his playoff shutout streak stopped at 217 minutes, 54 seconds -- the longest since 1951 -- when Minnesota's Andrew Brunette scored 4:37 into the game Friday night. Brunette deflected a shot by Cliff Ronning on a power play for the Wild's first goal against Giguere in the Western Conference finals. It gave Minnesota a short-lived 1-0 lead. Anaheim, up 3-0 in the series, came back and tied it on Adam Oates' power-play goal four minutes later. Giguere's scoreless streak is the fifth-longest in the postseason, and the longest since Montreal's Gerry McNeil went 218:42 in 1951. Montreal's George Hainsworth had the longest playoff shutout streak, going 270:08 in 1930. Dave Kerr of the New York Rangers is second with a streak of 248:35 in 1937, and Detroit's Norm Smith is third (248:32 in 1936). |
