Contrite in defeat Ducks' Bylsma congratulates Devils on Stanley Cup titlePosted: Tuesday June 10, 2003 4:16 PMEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Dan Bylsma didn't get his wish. Neither Scott Stevens nor any of the New Jersey Devils congratulated him on winning the Stanley Cup. Much to his dismay, he -- as the runner-up -- was the one who had to send good wishes along to the champions after Game 7. Bylsma, an Anaheim Mighty Ducks forward, created a firestorm at the start of the Stanley Cup finals. A statement he made on the radio became bulletin-board fodder for the Devils after it appeared in a local newspaper. "I'd really like to shake Scott Stevens' hand when he's congratulating me on winning the Stanley Cup," the photocopy that adorned a message board said. But that didn't happen. Stevens and the Devils skated off with a 3-0 victory and the Stanley Cup on Monday night. And by all accounts, it was a quiet exchange between Stevens and Bylsma in the handshake line. "No, nothing at all, just congratulating them on playing great," Stevens said. "I give them a lot of credit. They never quit and they made it very difficult for us." Bylsma didn't back off his statement when the series started. By the end, he was back to his more soft-spoken self. He didn't have much to say to Stevens, either. "Nope. Just congratulations on a good series," he said. |
