NEW YORK (AP) -- Left wing Valeri Kamensky and defenseman Stephane Quintal signed with the New York Rangers on Tuesday as the team begins to rebuild after failing to make the NHL playoffs last season.

Kamensky had 14 goals and 30 assists for the Colorado Avalanche last season, while Quintal had eight goals and 19 assists with the Montreal Canadiens. Both players were unrestricted free agents.

Kamensky spent his eight-year NHL career in the Colorado organization. The team was in Quebec from 1991-1995.

Kamensky, a 33-year-old Russian, has 166 goals and 248 assists during his NHL career. In 64 playoff games, he has 25 goals and 35 assists. Before coming to the NHL, Kamensky played nine seasons in Russia.

Quintal played in 82 games for the Canadiens last season, and his 27 points ranked second among Montreal defensemen. Quintal, 30, also played for Boston, St. Louis and Winnipeg.

Kamensky, 33, collected $1.9 million from Colorado last season. In 1998-99, he averaged .68 points per game, which would have ranked third on his new team.

Quintal earned $900,000 last season with Montreal. He had a poor plus-minus rating (minus-24) on a team that finished 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 32-39-11 record, two points behind the Rangers.
