DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Stars signed right wing Bill Guerin, one of the NHL's top free agents this offseason, to a five-year deal on Wednesday night.

Terms weren't disclosed, but The Dallas Morning News reported in Thursday's editions that the contract is worth $45 million, with $4.5 million deferred past the length of the deal.

Team officials could not be reached early Thursday by The Associated Press.

Guerin, 31, set a career high with 41 goals to tie for second in the league with the Boston Bruins last season. He also had 25 assists and led the NHL with 355 shots while leading the Bruins to the playoffs.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound right wing has scored 40 or more goals in each of the past two seasons. A veteran of 733 NHL games, Guerin has 256 goals and 248 assists with 1,036 penalty minutes in 11 seasons with Boston, Edmonton and New Jersey.

"Bill Guerin provides the organization with size and speed on the wing which is something we felt we needed," Stars general manager Doug Armstrong said. "We look forward to his contributions on the ice and off the ice in a leadership role over the next five years."

The Stars were looking for leadership after failing to make the playoffs for only the second time since moving to Dallas for the 1993-94 season and ranking 15th in goals scored.
