ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Wild were officially awarded the 2004 NHL All-Star game on Wednesday.

Word came out on Monday that the All-Star festivities would be held Jan. 24-25, 2004, at the Xcel Energy Center, but the announcement was held until Wednesday when the Wild hosted an exhibition game against the Calgary Flames.

"This community has incredibly passionate hockey fans, and embraces winter like no other community we've been to," said Frank Supovitz, the NHL's group vice president for events and entertainment. "So putting a premier winter event in a community like this just makes sense."

The Wild are the second-youngest NHL club to be awarded the All-Star game. Minnesota will be the host in the team's fourth season. The three-year-old St. Louis Blues staged the event in 1970.

The last time the NHL All-Star game was played in Minnesota was Jan. 25, 1972, at Met Center in Bloomington.
