EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Brad Isbister jumped right into the fray in Edmonton's rivalry with the Dallas Stars.

Isbister, acquired from the New York Islanders on Tuesday, threw punishing checks, got into a fight and scored a goal in the Oilers' 4-3 victory Saturday night.

"I've watched the playoffs series they've had in the past," Isbister said. "I know these guys don't like each other too much. I knew it was going to be an intense game.

"These are the fun games to play in. The crowd was into it, both teams were into it. A lot of intensity, a lot of big hits."

Ethan Moreau capped a flurry of goals with the winner with 8:36 left in the third. Moreau took a pass from rookie Fernando Pisani and slid a shot past goalie Corey Hircsh, making his first NHL start in more than four years.

"It was a lot of fun," Moreau said. "We were fortunate to come out on top. We battled hard. We were physical all night. To a man, we were all intense."

Edmonton took a 3-2 lead with 9:19 to go on a goal by Shawn Horcoff, but former Oiler Jason Arnott tied it 20 seconds later with his second goal of the game.

Radek Dvorak, acquired in another trade deadline deal earlier in the week, also scored for Edmonton.

"I finally had a good sleep last night," said Dvorak, who also had an assist. "This is the kind of game I need, a lot of skating and a lot of shooting."

Stu Barnes, also traded at the deadline from Buffalo, scored his first for Dallas, which remained three points behind Ottawa in the overall standings. The Senators lost 5-2 at home to the New York Islanders.

The Stars had their lead atop the Western Conference cut to one point over Detroit, which beat Colorado 5-3 earlier in the day.

Eighth-place Edmonton moved six points ahead of ninth-place Nashville.

Hirsch stopped 26 shots. He played for the first time this season on March 11 in relief of Ron Tugnutt.

"I felt fine. I just can't believe the mistakes that happened to me," Hirsch said. "Bad luck, whatever. I can't even believe it."

Salo made 24 saves.

Notes: Todd Marchant, Edmonton's leading scorer with 17 goals and 34 assists, sat out for the first of an expected three games with a heart condition known as viral pericarditis. He left Thursday's game against the Islanders after experiencing tightness in his chest and shortness of breath. ... Mike York returned to the Oilers after missing seven of the last eight games with a broken bone in a wrist. ... Dallas was 1-for-5 on the power play.
