Panthers name Pelino assistant coach to replace Sutter

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- Mike Pelino was hired as the Florida Panthers assistant coach on Wednesday, replacing Duane Sutter who now serves as the team's director of player development.

Pelino, 43, has been involved with Hockey Canada for the last four years, coaching at various levels in international competition. Pelino most recently served as assistant coach of Team Canada in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2003 World Championships in Finland.

Panthers' goaltender Roberto Luongo and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester were on the 2003 team. Both teams won the gold medal. Pelino has won a total of 10 gold medals in international competition.

He joins John Torchetti behind the Panthers' bench with coach Mike Keenan.

"He has tremendous knowledge of the game ... [and] has a vast amount of experience developing young talent," Panthers' general manager Rick Dudley said.

Wild sign free-agent blueliner Beckett

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Free-agent defenseman Jason Beckett signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday.

Beckett played last season for the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. The 6-foot-3, 218-pound defenseman ranked third on the team in penalty minutes (130), and had two goals and 10 assists in 64 games.

Before joining the Admirals, Beckett split time between the Philadelphia Phantoms and the Trenton Titans of the East Coast Hockey League. He was drafted by Philadelphia in the second round of the 1998 draft.

He played for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League from 1997 to 2000.

Hurricanes sign LaRose

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes have signed free agent Chad LaRose to a three-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.

Terms of the deal were not announced.

The 5-foot-10, 173-pound right wing led the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League to the West Division title in 2002-03, finishing with 61 goals and 56 assists in 67 games.

LaRose, 21, finished third in the league in scoring with 117 points, and his 61 goals were tied for second.

In three seasons with Plymouth, LaRose scored 111 goals, had 90 assists and had 116 penalty minutes in 152 regular-season games.

Larose is scheduled to attend the Hurricanes' rookie camp in Ottawa in early September.

UHL Fort Wayne signs two players

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- The Fort Wayne Komets of the United Hockey League have announced that they have signed two players from their 2002-03 championship season.

Forwards Ryan Severson and Ron Baker have agreed to terms and have been added to the 2003-2004 roster.

Severson will enter his third season with the Komets. He scored 13 goals and 30 points in 71 regular season games last season.

Baker registered four assists and five points in 33 games last season, his rookie season with the Komets.
