Las Vegas to be affiliated with Calgary

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The Las Vegas Wranglers have announced an agreement with the Calgary Flames that will provide five players for the team in its inaugural ECHL season.

Glen Gulutzan, the Wranglers' general manager and coach, said Thursday the addition of the NHL-affiliated players will add much-needed spunk to the team.

Gulutzan, who played one game for the Las Vegas Thunder of the now-defunct International Hockey League, said the intensity of the ECHL will be better than it was in the IHL because of the young players who are battling to advance.

"The IHL wasn't really a developmental league, it was more of a destination," Gulutzan told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "It had guys who were finishing their careers. The quality of hockey in this league, from a general hockey person's knowledge, is going to be more exciting.

"That's because of the simple fact that when you throw in these 20-, 21-year-old kids who really want to play and get to the next level, they'll do whatever it takes. They'll play with their hearts on their sleeves."

Gulutzan said he has an idea of who the Flames will assign to Las Vegas but declined to name them.

Flames general manager Darryl Sutter said he wants to rebuild the Flames with more North American players. He said the Flames have drafted an inordinate number of Europeans and haven't always been successful at signing them.
