Sharks sign sixth overall pick Michalek

Posted: Monday August 18, 2003 7:34 PM

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Ticker) -- The San Jose Sharks on Monday signed left wing Milan Michalek, the sixth overall selection in the 2003 draft.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Michalek was the second-ranked European prospect according to NHL Central Scouting before the draft, despite combining for just nine goals in two seasons in the Czech Elite League.

"We are excited to have Milan join the Sharks organization and look forward to having him in training camp," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "There is a reason we selected Milan at sixth overall in this year's draft."

At 6-2 and 205 pounds, the 18-year-old Michalek is a good skater with breakaway speed, although he has shown a reluctance to play in traffic. He had two goals and two assists in six games at the World Junior Championships.

"He has been successful with his experiences at several levels of play, including playing for the Czech National Team and representing the Czech Republic in the World Junior and World Championship tournaments," Wilson said. "We feel he is ready to make the transition to professional hockey in North America."

Canucks sign Kesler

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- The Vancouver Canucks signed first-round draft pick Ryan Kesler on Monday.

Kesler, the 23rd overall pick, had 11 goals, 20 assists and 44 penalty minutes last season as a freshman at Ohio State.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound center was a member of the U.S. team that won the 2002 Under-18 World Championship.
