For the second year in a row, the Atlanta Thrashers have secured the top-rated North American prospect in the NHL draft.

Selecting second overall, the Thrashers tabbed left wing Dany Heatley of the University of Wisconsin.

The New York Islanders used the top overall pick on goaltender Rick DiPietro, depriving Heatley of the chance to become the first U.S. collegiate player to go first in 14 years.

Born in Germany and raised in Calgary, the 6-1, 200-pound Heatley won WCHA Rookie of the Year honors after collecting 27 goals and 25 assists in 35 games for the Badgers. He also scored twice to help Canada to the bronze medal at the 2000 World Junior Championships.

Heatley followed his father to Wisconsin and is trying to follow him into professional hockey. Murray Heatley had a decade-long career in the WHA and in Europe.

Wisconsin coach Jeff Sauer called the younger Heatley "a scoring machine" with "a nose for the net."
