NEW YORK (AP) -- The NHL has suspended forward Chris Simon of the Washington Capitals for one playoff game for cross-checking Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Peter Popovic in Game 1 of their opening-round series.

Simon delivered a cross-check to the neck of Popovic at 19:16 of the second period of Thursday night's 7-0 loss to the Penguins in Washington. Simon was assessed a minor penalty for cross-checking.

The league ruled Friday that Simon would sit out Game 2 on Saturday in Pittsburgh.
