Making headway Lindros to start skating, but won't play against PensPosted: Thursday April 27, 2000 12:08 AM
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Eric Lindros was cleared to skate Tuesday, but his doctor said it will be at least two weeks before he can participate in scrimmage practices. Lindros, who missed the last 14 games of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs because of a Grade II concussion from an injury during a March 3 game, needs to recover gradually, said Dr. James P. Kelly, an associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Medical School. Kelly is the doctor who first determined that Lindros had a Grade II concussion instead of the less serious Grade I concussion as first thought. "I spoke with Eric today by phone," Kelly said Tuesday in a statement released by the Flyers. "He tells me that he has been engaging in stationary bicycle and other aerobic exercises for each day of this past week without any headache or any concussive symptoms. He states that he is sleeping well, that his energy level is improving, and that he is eager to take the next step of increasing his workout regimen." Kelly said he told Lindros that the next step would be to practice skating and shooting with no one else on the ice, but he should start doing it only for several minutes at a time, increasing his time gradually. The stationary bike workouts will continue, and Lindros can begin light weightlifting during the next week, Kelly said. Kelly said if Lindros gets any headaches, either during or even hours after his workouts, he will need to report them immediately. "He will call me again next week to report on the progress of the workouts," Kelly said. "If he has done well, we will arrange for him to come to Chicago for me to re-examine him." The Flyers beat Buffalo in five games in the opening round of the playoffs and start the Eastern Conference semifinals against Pittsburgh on Thursday.
