EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev, who missed the final two periods of Game 5 after being slashed in the ribs, did not play Monday night against the New Jersey Devils.

Karpovtsev was injured Saturday night when New Jersey forward Claude Lemieux slashed him in the ribs from behind in the first period of the Devils' 4-3 victory.

The injury led to a rapid heartbeat and forced Karpovtsev to sit out the rest of the game. Karpovtsev was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons and was back at Air Canada Centre following the game.

The decision to sit Karpovtsev, who has no goals and three assists in this year's playoffs, was made to give him extra rest.

Toronto left wing Wendel Clark also missed Monday's sixth game with a back injury.
