Return of the Big E? Lindros says he's hoping to play in Game 6 or 7Posted: Wednesday May 17, 2000 09:23 PM
By Mike Ulmer, SLAM! Sports PHILADELPHIA -- Eric Lindros is leaving the door open for a return to action this season, possibly as early as Game 6 or 7 of the NHL Eastern Conference should the Philadelphia Flyers take the series that long. At a quickly arranged news conference orchestrated by the Flyers, Lindros said he hasn't had a concussion-related headache in 10 days and will continue on-ice workouts, which he began yesterday, at the Flyers' practice facility. He will consult with Chicago-based neurologist Dr.James Kelly next week. "I know that I'm supposed to do a baseline test sometime next week and from there I'll do some things with Dr. Kelly, see what he says and hopefully get some clearance," Lindros said. The prospect of a return by Lindros looms as a bonus for the Flyers, who have missed his physical presence in their opening two games against the New Jersey Devils. It would, however, represent a distraction, given that the players endorsed the idea of stripping Lindros of his captaincy after he complained about his medical treatment by club doctors and trainers in mid-March. Lindros was diplomatic when asked about hard feelings. "In my eyes, I think [new captain] Eric Desjardins has come in and done a real good job and will continue to do a good job," Lindros said. "I just want to come in and play hockey. I don't think taking a consonant off a shirt is going to make a big deal." Lindros has not spoken with Flyers general manager Bob Clarke about a return, but the fact the club convened the news conference at the First Union Centre points to the GM's consenting to his star's return. Clarke had said he would insist on an apology before allowing Lindros, 27, back. Lindros' return seemed scrubbed when he suffered another concussion, his fifth, May 4 during a light scrimmage. He said he is working with a manufacturer to produce a mouthguard that would help him ward off further concussions. He left the lineup nine days after Boston Bruins defenceman Hal Gill's shoulder caught Lindros flush on the cheek on March 4. "I think things will evolve real quick," Lindros said. "I feel good and I want to get back."
