Squandered chances Devils can't convert in Game 2Posted: Friday June 02, 2000 12:38 AM
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Randy McKay's frustrated look summed up the New Jersey Devils' night in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Dallas Stars. The Devils had plenty of chances to beat Ed Belfour -- maybe even more than in their 7-3 victory Tuesday night -- but only did it once Thursday night in a 2-1 loss. Brett Hull scored both goals for the Stars, getting the winner with 4:16 to play following a New Jersey turnover. Mike Modano pushed the puck around defenseman Brian Rafalski and Hull redirected Jere Lehtinen's fluttering shot past goaltender Martin Brodeur. Until then, the Devils had at least a half dozen great chances to take the lead. No one had more than McKay, one of the heroes of the Devils' 1995 championship season. McKay, scoreless in his last 19 playoffs games, had a chance in close in the second period and mouthed an obscenity when Belfour stopped the shot. Early in the third, he missed on a close-range deflection attempt. With 13:20 to play, he failed to convert from 10 feet. Claude Lemieux also had a couple of great chances, one on a backhander in close in the opening minute of the third period and another on a 25-foot shot. Jason Arnott and Petr Sykora, who both scored two goals in Game 1, also had chances on a power play with less than nine minutes to play, but Belfour stopped them. Brodeur only faced three shots in the first period, but one was a great one by Hull. Modano won a battle along the boards with Rafalski and sent the puck back to Hull at the top of the circle. He wristed a bullet of a shot over Brodeur's glove into the top of the net. Alexander Mogilny tied it at 12:42. After taking a pass from Scott Stevens, Scott Gomez skated the puck through the neutral zone with Roman Lyashenko draped all over him. Approaching the Stars' zone, the rookie center kicked the puck forward, giving Mogilny a clear path to Belfour, who gave up six goals on 18 shots in Game 1 before being replaced.
Mogilny, who had hit the goalpost right after Hull scored,
didn't miss this time, snapping a shot from the inside edge of the
left circle.
