Reactions: The best game ever? Devils, Stars fans agree: Game 5 was one for the booksPosted: Friday June 09, 2000 07:51 PM CNNSI.com asked users for their reactions to Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals, and despite the game's length, many users were glued to their seats. Many said they believe the Stars are back in it, though the Devils' fans believe it's still New Jersey's series to lose. A sample of the responses follows:Belfour played as perfect a game in goal as can be played. But he will need two more in a row to pull the Stars through. Barring divine intervention that's not going to happen, even against the Devils. Devils in Dallas in six.
The Stars are up against a younger team that is extremely good. I expect the Devils to close it out in six. After watching them fritter away so many chances in regulation I expected the Stars to win. Much like they did in Game 2.
I think it is highly unlikely that Dallas will lose a third time on their home ice when you consider their record at home. I strongly believe Dallas will win on Saturday forcing Game 7. However, Game 7 is anybody's guess.
That win and the crowd in Dallas will be enough of a second wind for the Stars to win Game 6. But they'll run out of gas in what should be a classic, absolute beauty of a game 7 in N.J.!
The Stars will not lose three straight at home. Look for more of Game 5's marathon man action in Game 7 on Monday night in New Jersey. Dallas in 7 and the Conn for Eddie!
The Stars definitely have a chance and I hope they pull it out. If they don't, they can only blame themselves. They simply wasted Game 1 and even though they won Game 2, they only began to play at their maximum level last night in the overtimes.
The NHL has reached rock bottom. The only reason I was able to sit through that poor excuse for a hockey game was because I wanted to see the Stanley Cup. BORING!
The game was just outstanding. I couldn't have asked for a better game. It kept me on the edge of my seat and could have easily given me a heart attack. The Stars have taken all of N.J.'s momentum away from them and have a really, really good chance to go to a game 7. From there, the best team/goaltender wins. Go Stars!!
WHAT A GAME!!!!!!! The Stars have a slim chance, I thinks it's only been done once in history. However, with the Stanley Cup Finals going back to Dallas anything is possible. The Stars are the defending champs; they know what they have to do -- they'll come out doing it. GO STARS!!!!
The champs were obviously not going down without a fight, and they changed the whole flow of the series when they took over the play in the 2nd OT, and eventually tallied the monumental game winner. I think New Jersey is now in trouble as "the wounded animal" has sprung to life. But more importantly, I think the Stars now think so, too.
Great Game 5. But I say "What's in them water bottles?" How could the Stars, who are the older, slower team suddenly get so much energy all of a sudden, that they're faster and playing with noticeably more exuberance -- matching or exceeding what they had the whole night previous? Reminds me of the Cup clincher last year with Buffalo -- the Stars played that last period like they were on afterburner. I thought it was unnatural and odd then. Looked a little like that last night. I'd figure both teams would have about the same amount of gas in the tank. Maybe this sounds too suspicious, but I used to be amazed at Michael "Dynamite" Dokes too.
What a great Game 5. The cup was in the house and the Devils were unable to hoist it. I feel that the edge goes to Dallas now. I think last night's goaltending protests that Ed Belfour still has it and found the game to be on of the more memorable playoff games. We will see if the Devils can focus a win on Saturday night in Dallas. I cannot wait for the puck to drop.
Whether the Stars won or lost, I was excited to have witnessed the greatest match ever of any sport. It was the equivalent of watching two pitchers working on no-hitters in extra innings -- except the first base hit wins the game. Simply spectacular!
I grant you that Belfour had a very, very good game. But he was also very, very lucky. The puck hit the post at least twice and barely missed the net a couple of times too. Brodeur was outstanding and kept the Devils alive when the rest of the team ran out of gas. All without the help of post one and two.
