DENVER (AP) -- Colorado Avalanche center Joe Sakic was scratched from Friday night's Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Los Angeles Kings.

Sakic, who missed most of Game 3 and all of Game 4 with a sore right shoulder, skated with the team Friday morning but decided to sit out as Colorado tried to clinch the best-of-seven series.

"I am not playing," he said. "The shoulder is good, but it's not quite ready for tonight."

Sakic, the NHL's second-leading scorer during the regular season, injured his shoulder five minutes into Game 3 in Los Angeles. He has five goals and three assists in the playoffs.

"Doctors are taking a precautionary approach," he said. "The last thing you want to do is go out and miss another two or three weeks."

Without Sakic, the Avalanche took a 3-1 series lead over the Kings as they tried to earn their third straight trip to the conference finals.
