NEW YORK (AP) -- Close play in the Stanley Cup finals has generated preliminary TV ratings equal to last year's on ABC.

Games 3 and 4 between New Jersey and Colorado have averaged a 3.7 overnight rating and 7 share -- identical to the overnight numbers for Games 3 and 4 between New Jersey and Dallas in 2000.

The Devils' 3-2 victory against the Avalanche in Game 4 on Saturday night, tying the best-of-seven series, drew only a 3.3 overnight rating. That's 21 percent lower than Game 4 last year, which was on a Monday, when more people watch TV than Saturday nights.

Overnight ratings are based on the 49 largest U.S. TV markets, covering about 65 percent of the country. Each point represents 1 percent of TV households.

During the regular season, the NHL averaged 1.1 ratings for its five broadcasts on ABC this season, down 15 percent from the ratings for four games last season. It's also 48 percent lower than Fox's regular-season NHL telecasts drew in 1996.

Ratings were down 5 percent on ESPN and 14 percent on ESPN2 during the regular season.
