Maple Leafs sign Swedish D Mattias Ohlund to offer sheet Posted: Fri August 1, 1997 at 3:07 p.m. EDT The Toronto Maple Leafs today signed Swedish defenseman Mattias Ohlund, who was the 13th overall selection in the 1994 NHL draft by Vancouver, to an offer sheet. According to IMG, which represents Ohlund, the offer is for a five-year contract worth $10 million with a signing bonus in excess of $7.5 million. Vancouver has seven days to match the offer entirely or make a deal with Toronto to deal his rights. If the Canucks match the offer, Ohlund cannot be traded for one year, and if they do not, they will not be compensated by the Maple Leafs. "I am extremely pleased to have finally signed and I look forward to the challenge of playing against NHL players," said Ohlund in a release issued by IMG. "I am pleased that the negotiations are over and I can now prepare to come to North America." The 20-year-old Ohlund was voted the best defenseman at the past World Junior Championship tournament, and earned second all-star team honors at the World Championships in Finland.© 2003 SportsTicker Enterprises, LP
