Your take on the Canucks' Pavel Bure

Click here for more on this story

Posted: Sunday January 17, 1999 06:09 PM

Bure has refused to play for Vancouver and wants to be traded Ian Tomlinson/Allsport

CNN/SI asked for your opinion on the Canucks' best trade options for the disgruntled Pavel Bure. Here's a selection of comments:

I would trade Chelios, Coffey, DuMont and Trefilov and a first round draft choice for Bure. Chicago needs a scorer to complement Amonte. The Canucks need good defensive players and a good back-up goalie. Bure, Zhamanov and Amonte would then be called the Legion of Boom.
-- Casey Guzik, Chicago, Ill.

Let the Baby rot. The Canucks should keep him until the end of this season and then let some other team sign him as a restricted free agent. Match whatever offer is made, then let him sit and rot for the remainder of that contract. It is time that owners and fans teach these babies a lesson.
-- Michael K. Kato, Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada

Just as the NBA, I'm tired of hearing from these crybabies who will make more money in one season than I will in three lifetimes. As much as I used to like Pavel, I have no respect for him or others who have pulled this stunt in the past. Just let him rot!
-- Paul Van Buekenhout, North Vancouver, British Columbia

The best scenario would have Vancouver sending Bure, Hirsch, and a 2nd round pick in 1999 to the Washington Capitals for Konowalchuk, Tabaracci, Witt, 1st Round pick in 1999, and a 2nd round pick in 2000. Vancouver gets toughness on the front line (something Keenan should like), a young, tough defenseman, and a back-up goaltender. The Washington Capitals get a much needed goal scorer to go along with Bondra.
-- Marcus Washington, Catlett, Va.

Pavel, Pavel, Pavel -- why hast thou forsaken us? For the kind on money you want, maybe you should play baseball. There is no doubt that you will put people in the seats and it looks like Los Angeles is the best destination. In return, how about Jamie Storr (because he may be gone in the expansion draft anyway) and Lucky Luc? Luc and Messier worked pretty well together, and the fans in Vancouver need to see a few goals scored too.
-- Tom Hickson, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

I would think that the team that would benefit most by getting Pavel Bure would probably be St. Louis because they lost their star attraction in Brett Hull. In return, the Canucks would get two prospects and probably Chris Pronger.
-- Matt Bloom, Tampa, Fla.

Pavel should sit the rest of the year. As fans, we can not let rougue players run the sport we love. He signed a contract, he should honor it. Sports are going on a downward spiral towards oblivion. Just look around at the others, basketball in particular.
-- Andy Paqowitz, Boston, Mass.

I think that the Canucks' best way to deal with Pavel Bure is to let him play out his career with a club team in Russia, dreaming of what might have been. While he is a talented player who is certainly capable of big numbers on the ice, his constant whining and inflated opinion of himself has just gotten a little tiresome.
-- Tom, Roseneath, Ontario, Canada

With someone like Mark Messier on your team, the time to win is now. Dump Bure to Rangers for Graves, Beukeboom, and Cloutier.
-- Stevey D, Rahway, New Jersey

Bure claims he is in the spotlight and wants out. Maybe the Canucks should let him get lost in Russia!
-- Kelly Desmond, Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada

The word around New York is that the Rangers are eventually going to have to trade for Bure, but it seems to me like that would be an impossible deal to work out. Specifically, that means Beukeboom, Stevens, Samuelsson, Tikannen, and perhaps even the newly-acquired John MacLean. I'm sure the Rangers would also be willing to deal Niklas Sundstrom in a Bure deal. Among these players, Vancouver might find some combination they feel equals Bure's value, and since they are one of the few teams who might be willing to pay for members of that group, it could mean the right deal for both teams.
-- Jonathan Margulies, New York

Trade Pavel for a new water bottle. The Canucks are a cursed franchise that will never win a Cup. The NHL has been against the Canucks since day we booed Team Canada in '72.
-- Paul Harris, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Trade him like the Gretzky Trade in the 1980's. Get money and some half-decent players for him. He's a wimp and a whiner and doesn't deserve to be in the NHL.
-- Andrew Power, Gander, Newfoundland, Canada

Pavel Bure should be traded to the Dallas Stars for Jamie Langenbrunner and Pat Verbeek. Bure can provide even more spark to the potent Dallas offense. Verbeek and Langenbrunner do not match the skill and talent level of what the Stars expect.
-- Jason Rice, Dallas, Texas

I think that the Canucks should trade Bure to the Phoenix Coyotes. At Phoenix, he could be paired with JR and Keith Tkachuk, to form one of the outstanding lines in hockey. Bure would score tons of points and justify keeping the jerk on my fantasy hockey team too long!
-- Jim Mckenna, Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Canucks should trade Pavel Bure ASAP. They are robbing the league and fans of one of the most explosive players on the planet. It seems like Brian Burke is still doing his old job and setting an example with what he is doing to Pavel Bure. He should be traded to the New York Rangers for Dan Cloutier, Niklas Sundstrom, Kevin Stevens, and Jeff Beukeboom.
-- Stanley So, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Bure for Osgood and Doug Brown. The Wings' third and fourth lines need help. Osgood is without question a solid goalie, but needs a revival. Bure would have chemistry with Fedorov, Larionov, and Kozlov. Vancouver would solidify in goal, and with the addition of Brown on their wings.
-- Chad Scott, East Lansing, Mich.

What's up with Burke? Just because he says, "Pavel Bure is not my boss" doesn't mean you have to do exactly what he doesn't want. He was brought in there to do the best for the team, and this is the worst thing he could possibly do with the team struggling offensively. Whatever the decision, figure it out, fast.
-- Emily Teachout, Edina, Minn.

I feel that Pavel Bure should go to the Tampa Bay Lightning. If he has a problem with the losing record of Vancouver, then maybe he should know what it's really like to be on a losing team.
-- Joel Treier, Chicago, Ill.

First of all, Pavel Bure is a great goal scorer, but he is not a player that is going to make a good team great. Whatever team takes gets him will have more money problems than he is worth. So with that said, trade him to the Flyers. They are the best team with giving away money for nothing in return.
-- Martin Erdei, Buffalo, N.Y.

Trade him to anyone, and make sure that they are obliged to take Mike Keenan, Mark Messier, and their passel of "Waiver Drafts" with them. Mike Keenan wouldn't know a good player if he was standing next to him. He has gutted this team, and brought in a bunch of "plumbers." We're getting to look more and more like the Boston Bruins every day.
-- Gordon Hopkin, Richmond, British Columbia, Canada

Bure to the Rangers for Niklas Sundstrom, Christian Dube and Daniel Goneau. Canucks will get three young and talented players, two of which are unjustifiably languishing in the minor leagues. Rangers will get much-needed scoring threat to compliment Nedved, Gretzky. Bure loves New York -- he can blow his money in all the new Russian restaurants that have opened in the Big Apple.
-- Sergei Alschen, New Jersey

Trade Brian Burke for a monkey. The monkey could do a better job, and the team and the NHL wouldn't have to put up with his ego.
-- Joseph C Kessler, Buffalo, N.Y.

Philly needs a quick scorer to go along with the big bruisers. In return, Vancouver could get Forbes, Renberg, and a couple of 1st round picks to begin (again) rebuild their team trough trades and young draft picks rather than signing old players with high salaries, ie., Messier.
-- Matt Wagenhoffer, Everett, Wash.

I see Pavel Bure going to the San Jose Sharks for Marleuo, Owen Nolan, and Jeff Friesen or a high draft pick. Another place would be St. Louis for some draft picks, Jim Cambell, Marc Bergiven, and Jamie Rivers or Chris McAlpine.
-- Joseph Deien, Centralia, Ill.

Trade him to the Bruins for Jim Carey, Dimitri Kristich and a draft pick. The Bruins need some spark and someone to help the young guys along.
-- Derek, Boston, Mass.

Shoot him and collect the insurance money. Claim he was cleaning his gun and skating at the same time, a terrible tragedy.
-- Jeff Brereton, Nutley, N.J.

Bure needs to understand what he has requested. It's not like in Russia he can just "blend" in. His ego has surpassed his on-ice ability, which is quite a feat. He is useless to the Canucks at his present position. Let him sign a contract with a Russia team. Maybe a better solution is trading him for a dog. At least a dog is loyal to people who treat it with kindness.
-- Eric Lau, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Blackball the little crybaby from the league.
-- Sam, Boston, Mass.

The Rocket is a hell of a skater. But when he was out, someone had to replace him. Let me introduce Markus Naslund. Talk about a major breakthrough. Send him to Iraq, and Saddam is doomed. Honestly! That man will make wonders happen. Trade Pavel for a couple of picks and let Markus BLOOM.
-- Kurt Ritter, Gothenburg, Sweden
