TORONTO (AP) -- The Hall of Fame just can't wait to get Wayne Gretzky.

Gretzky, whose glittering 20-year NHL career ended Sunday, might get in before the customary three years is up. The shrine previously waived the rule for Mario Lemieux and Jean Belliveau.

The selection committee will vote on the matter April 29. If three-quarters of the committee approves the resolution, the board of directors will vote on it June 14.

"Wayne Gretzky's achievements, both on and off the ice, are unparalleled in the sport of hockey," said Jim Gregory, who heads the selection committee. "Wayne definitively exemplifies all aspects of the election criteria which includes playing ability, sportsmanship, character and contributions to his teams and to the game of hockey in general."

This year's induction ceremony is Nov. 22 in Toronto.
