NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Rangers signed free agent goalie Kirk McLean to a multiyear contract on Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not announced.

McLean, 33, was 9-10-4 with a 2.74 goals-against average in 30 games with the Florida Panthers last season. He will back up regular Mike Richter and replaces Dan Cloutier, who was traded to Tampa Bay last month.

In 14 seasons in the NHL, McLean has also played for Carolina, Vancouver and New Jersey and has a career 3.26 goals-against average. He is 34-34 with a 2.84 goals-against average in 68 playoff games and helped Vancouver to the Western Conference championship in 1993-94. The Rangers beat the Canucks in seven games for the Stanley Cup that season.

McLean is the fourth high-profile free agent signed by the Rangers since the NHL season ended.

Last week, New York reached agreement on a three-year, $24 million contract with six-time All-Star Theo Fleury, who finished last season with Colorado. The Rangers also signed 33-year-old Valeri Kamensky, a left wing from the Avalanche, and 30-year-old Stephane Quintal, a defenseman, who played for Montreal.
