SUNRISE, Fla. (Ticker) -- Florida Panthers goaltender Trevor Kidd, off to the best start of his career, will be out a minimum of two months after dislocating his right shoulder in Monday's skills competition.
Kidd was hurt during the rapid fire competition in which the opposing team -- consisting of his own teammates -- attempts to score with five pucks, which are lined up in a horseshoe formation in front of the goal.
The 27-year-old Kidd will be re-evaluated after the swelling subsides, which is expected to be in the next 7-10 days.
Kidd is 13-4-2 with a 2.03 goals-against average and .932 save percentage. He ranks second in the NHL in save percentage, fourth in wins and fourth in goals-against.
His hot start allowed the Panthers to deal veteran Sean Burke to Phoenix on November 19 for career backup Mikhail Shtalenkov, who becomes the starter. Richard Shulmistra was recalled from Louisville to serve as the backup.
Shtalenkov, 34, is 1-1 with a 2.34 GAA and .918 save percentage in three games for the Panthers, who lead the Southeast Division at 16-10-2. He was the starter in Phoenix before being traded, going 7-6-2 with a 2.39 GAA and .903 save percentage.
Shulmistra, 28, was 9-9-1 with a 3.36 GAA and .891 save percentage in 20 games for Louisville before his recall.
In his first season with Florida, Kidd finally had established himself as an All-Star caliber goalie. He entered the campaign 100-97-35 with a 2.69 GAA over 250 games for Carolina and Calgary.
The 11th overall pick by the Flames in 1990, Kidd was selected from the Hurricanes by Atlanta in the expansion draft, then acquired by the Panthers for three players and a draft pick.
