By Pierre McGuire, Sports Illustrated

This is a weekly analysis of teams based on their performance over the last seven days and will change on a regular basis. Previous position in the Power Rankings appear in the right column under "LW."

This week you will find each team's New Year's Resolution in the order of the Power Rankings. Please have a safe and Happy New Year.

CNN/SI Power Rankings
RankLWTeam
13 Detroit Red Wings
We resolve to keep our older legs fresh for a LONG PLAYOFF DRIVE and, no matter what, our goaltending won't let us down.
24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Our motto will be that OUR LEAFS ARE TOUGHER THEN YOUR LEAFS, meaning that we won't let your players abuse our star players down the stretch.
31 Philadelphia Flyers
OK, everyone knows about John LeClair and Eric Lindros and Mark Recchi, but we have our fair share of footsoldiers who we promise will make their mark before the end of the season. We also promise not to fall asleep at the switch in key games down the stretch.
42 St. Louis Blues
As a team we may not have the best players, but we do have great team attitude and a solid system. Our coaches believe in us, so we need to do a better job in believing in our goaltenders.
56 Dallas Stars
We'll try to get all our guys healthy so that we can defend our championship. We also need to start scoring a lot more goals -- not that you couldn't have figured that out.
69 New Jersey Devils
We're coming on and we know it. Aside from all the sideshow antics with some players wanting out we know that we can get the job done. As a group we promise not to let individual ideals infect what should be a great playoff season.
75 Phoenix Coyotes
We know, we know, it has been a long time coming but we will not fall apart this year -- even if our goaltending is a little suspect right now. We will also support each other more then we have in the past.
87 Florida Panthers
Pavel Bure is our go-to guy, but we have more than you think. Next time you watch our team play, we promise you'll see grit that was never present before. We also know that at some point Ray Whitney will get the respect he deserves around the league.
98 Colorado Avalanche
Finally. We have virtually our whole lineup intact and look what we did to St. Louis. We promise to lower our shots against because we know that in order to win in the playoffs you have to be a solid defensive team.
1010 Anaheim Mighty Ducks
Our goal is to make sure that our special teams don't let us down, which will keep us from the playoffs. We also now know that we have to follow our coaches' plans in order to improve.
1119 Pittsburgh Penguins
We're awake now because we don't have to worry about trying to show off our skills. However, we do need to do a better job protecting our goalies, because -- like Colorado in the West -- we can score but we need to keep the shots against down.
1213 Ottawa Senators
We don't have Alexei Yashin, but we resolve to make no excuses. Five-on-five, we limit the chances of our opponents and our penalty killing will continue to be great. We will win games as our power play improves.
1314 San Jose Sharks
We know that Owen Nolan can't do it all by himself so as a group we promise to score more goals. Also we know that it takes discipline to win so watch us lower our penalty minutes.
1412 Calgary Flames
How about our guy Fred Brathwaite? He is a great example for all of us to follow and we promise we will. Hard work and pride can lead us to the promised land of the playoffs.
1520 Edmonton Oilers
We are starting to get it. Sure, Billy Guerin has awakened, but so have a lot of the other guys. Our second-half goal is to play as hard shift in and shift out as our mighty might Todd Marchant, because if we do we'll cause teams problems in the second half.
1625 Nashville Predators
Nobody knows any of our players, but who cares. We care about one another and we have a system that allows us to compete in the West. However, we know we will need to score more goals and we can't just rely on Cliff Ronning to do that.
1716 Los Angeles Kings
OK, OK, we know that we have struggled of late, but you just watch us wake up. As for our resolution: We have to make a few adjustments in our style, but that shouldn't be a problem. We know we cannot blame yet another coach for our shortcomings.
1826 New York Islanders
Yes, that's right we made a big trade with Vancouver and we won two in a row. So going into the New Year watch us fly with young guys being excited about being in the league. Oh yeah, and we'll need Roberto Luongo and Kevin Weekes to make the difference on most nights if we are to win more nights than not.
1918 New York Rangers
Our mission is simple: We'll show the world that money can buy happiness and that we will have a playoff slot before the season is over.
2017 Carolina Hurricanes
Up one night, down the next. We have got to get that out of our repertoire. Our main man Ron Francis is geared up and we can follow his lead, but without Keith Primeau it will be tough to make it to the dance.
2115 Boston Bruins
We can keep outshooting teams all we want, but if we can't score what does it matter? One thing that is for sure we need to do a much better job on faceoffs. Do we really miss Tim Taylor that much?
2221 Buffalo Sabres
We promise to get back to our gritty in-your-face style. OK, so some of us took the first half off, but you can count on us to be there when it matters, and we know that it matters right now for us. Our great fans deserve nothing less.
2324 Montreal Canadiens
INJURIES have thwarted our first half abilities, but it has not dulled our spirit. We may not make the playoffs, but we'll make sure some other people miss them as well. We'll play the role of spoiler, or maybe even get a little good fortune and make it. Thanks for standing by us during this tough time.
2423 Washington Capitals
We just can't score enough to get the job done right now. They know it, but Adam Oates and Richard Zednik need to score more goals for us and we need more from Sergei Gonchar at the offensive end.
2528 Atlanta Thrashers
Look at us, we can go into Detroit with a rookie goalie and steal a point. Down the stretch it will be important for us to stay together, and keep growing as an organization.
2611 Tampa Bay Lightning
Man, have we hit the skids after what looked like a turn around. We need to stick together like Atlanta and get some better goaltending.
2722 Chicago Blackhawks
We're trying and things seem to be getting better. We promise to give our fans a better show on home ice and produce more wins for them.
2827 Vancouver Canucks
We know that we no longer have any excuses after our GM went out and got a goalie who will not surrender an early goal. Now it is up to us to deliver. Missing the playoffs will be unacceptable after the start we had.
