Doh! John LeClair is really a Homer at heart

John LeClair was the pride of St. Albans, Vermont, even before he became the first American-born player to score 50 goals in three consecutive seasons. After scoring came to a league-wide halt last season, LeClair is back on pace to break 50 again this year ... which just might get him that guest spot on "The Simpsons" he may or may not be seeking.

1. Sports Illustrated named you the fourth greatest athlete out of Vermont: Can you name the top three?

I can name the sports, but I can't think of the names off-hand. I'm sorry, I can't.

2. If Vermont and New Hampshire were to engage in a border war, who would win?

Definitely Vermont. Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. That tradition continues on.

3. Forty-nine goals in 224 games with Montreal; 244 goals in 401 games with the Flyers: What happened to you?

Just one of those things. I got to play with Eric and that gave me a lot more offensive opportunities. It was a good change for me.

4. The All-Star Game is coming up: What's your opinion of the International Showdown?

I kind of like it. I think it adds a little more intensity to the game and makes for a little more entertaining game for everybody.

5. The Olympic issue is still up in the air: Would you want to play in the Olympics again?

I definitely would. I think obviously from the U.S. standpoint it was very disappointing how things turned out for us and it would be nice to have another chance to win a medal.

6. Which opposing rink do you look forward to visiting each year and why?

I kind of like going back to Montreal. It's fun. It's close to my hometown. For me, going back to the city because I spent quite a bit time there. It's always enjoyable. It's a beautiful city. I enjoy visiting.

So losing the Forum didn't ruin any of the mystique for you?

It did a little bit. The Forum was probably the all-time greatest rink around. It was a real disappointment when it left. But I still enjoy visiting the city.

7. In the media guide it says you would like to appear on The Simpsons. What kind of cartoon character do you see for yourself?

I don't know where they got that either, but ... I watch the show, but I don't know how well I'd fit in. Maybe as one of Bart's friends or Homer's co-workers.
John LeClair John LeClair can become the only American-born player with four 50-goal seasons. Ian Tomlinson/Allsport

Just eating donuts at the plant?

Exactly.

8. It seems as if the 50-goal scorers are coming out of hibernation this year. Has play opened up the way the league wanted it to?

I think so. With the crease rule taken out you get a few more goals here and there. It has opened up a little more. More teams are going a little more offensively and you get more goals.

9. Ever been lauded for a great goal or play and meanwhile you're thinking ... 'Damn that was lucky?'

Pretty much every time I score.

If you hadn't become a hockey player, what would you be doing?

Who knows ... running for president. I really don't know. It's one of those things that I'm real fortunate that I am playing hockey because it's something I've loved to do all along.

You could run for the Senate in New York.

Seems pretty easy. Everybody wants to do it now, huh?
