NEW YORK (AP) -- San Jose Sharks defenseman Bryan Marchment was suspended by the NHL for three games without pay Saturday for spearing the Anaheim Mighty Ducks' Paul Kariya a night earlier.

Marchment received a major penalty and a game misconduct for the hit, which occurred at 9:22 of the third period of San Jose's 4-2 loss at Anaheim on Friday night.

Marchment, treated by the NHL as a repeat offender, will miss the Sharks' game at Dallas on March 19, and home games against Vancouver on March 22 and Phoenix on March 24.

Marchment, who will lose $89,268 in salary, will be able to return for San Jose's game against Edmonton on March 27.
