DENVER (AP) -- Defenseman Ray Bourque is undecided if he'll become an unrestricted free agent when his contract with the Colorado Avalanche expires July 1, his agent said Tuesday.

"We don't know at this point," agent Steve Fryer said. "It's always a possibility."

The Avalanche retain sole negotiating rights with Bourque until the contract expires, and he was among the 15 players they protected Tuesday in advance of the NHL expansion draft.

"We said it was a priority for us to sign him," Colorado general manager Pierre Lacroix said. "I don't discuss contract negotiations, but, yes, we want him back. We would like to do everything we can to get him back."

Fryer said Bourque is forbidden from contacting other teams until July 1, and said the subject had not come up in his talks with Bourque.

"Either he signs or he doesn't, and then we go from there," Fryer said.

Bourque, 39, came to the Avalanche in a March trade. He asked to be traded from Boston, where he played for nearly 21 seasons, to make a run at a Stanley Cup championship.

After the Avalanche were eliminated by Dallas in the Western Conference finals, Bourque said he preferred to stay in Denver.
