EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Craig MacTavish is expected to be picked as the Edmonton Oilers' new coach, completing a shakeup that began with the departure of general manager Glen Sather.

The Oilers called a news conference for Thursday and were expected to introduce MacTavish as the successor to Kevin Lowe.

MacTavish declined to comment when interviewed by the Edmonton Journal, which reported the expected announcement in Wednesday's editions.

"My lips are sealed," MacTavish said. "We'll see Thursday."

MacTavish spent the 1999 season as an assistant to Lowe, who moved from coach to general manager after Sather, the architect of the Oilers' Stanley Cup dynasty of a decade ago, went to the New York Rangers as GM.

A native of London, Ontario, MacTavish was the 153rd pick in the 1978 amateur draft by Boston and spent 17 seasons in the NHL, most of them with the Oilers in their Stanley Cup days. He was an All-Star selection in 1996 and retired as a player the following year.
