Return to glory? Reports have Messier rejoining RangersPosted: Monday July 10, 2000 10:50 AM
NEW YORK (AP) -- Mark Messier has agreed to a two-year contract to rejoin the New York Rangers, the New York Post reported Monday. Messier, who led the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup championship in 54 years in 1994, left to sign with Vancouver and played the last three seasons with the Canucks. One of the most popular captains in team history, Messier will sign a deal worth $8 million, including a $2 million signing bonus, according to the newspaper. The Daily News reported Monday that Messier's contract is worth $11 million for two years, but Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather told that newspaper the deal is not completed. “It's a long way from being done as far as I can tell,” he said. Messier, 39, became an unrestricted free agent July 1 after the Canucks bought out his contract rather than exercise their option to bring him back next season at a salary of $6 million. Messier had 17 goals and 37 assists in 66 games for Vancouver last season. Neither he, nor the Rangers, have been to the playoffs since he left New York.
