BOSTON (AP) -- Bruins goaltender John Grahame has broken his ankle and will need surgery, the club announced Monday.

Grahame told the Bruins he was hurt when he tripped while stepping off a curb. Further information about the injury was not immediately available.

The team expects Grahame will have surgery later this week, when swelling around he injury has subsides. The surgery has not yet been scheduled and the severity of the injury was not immediately known.

The team does not know how long Grahame will be unable to play.

Grahame, 25, played in 24 games this past year for the Bruins. He had a record of 7 wins, 10 losses and 5 ties and had a goals-against average of 2.46. In three preseason games, he was 2-1 with a goals-against average of 3.67.

The injury comes just as Bruins goaltender Byron Dafoe returns from off-season knee surgery.

The club has a third goaltender in camp, 20-year-old Andrew Raycroft. He was last year's goaltender of the year for Kingston of the Ontario Hockey league, and the first goaltender named that league's Most Valuable Player since 1951-52.

The Bruins are not shopping for a replacement goaltender right now, a team spokesman said.

A native of Denver, Grahame set an American Hockey League record in 1998-99 with 19 consecutive wins.
