Cross-check costs Zednik four games
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Washington Capitals wing Richard Zednik, whose cross-checking penalty helped Patrick Roy break the NHL record for goaltending victories, was suspended four games for the hit by the NHL Thursday. Zednik, responding to a blow to the head, cross-checked Colorado Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote in the face during Tuesday night's game at the MCI Center. Foote received a two-minute penalty for elbowing, while Zednik received a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct. During the three-minute power play that followed, the Avalanche scored in overtime, giving Roy his 448th career victory, passing Terry Sawchuk. The NHL has promised a crackdown on infractions such as Zednik's, but the Capitals were not happy with the punishment. "It's not worthy of a suspension," general manager George McPhee told The Washington Post. McPhee said Zednik "was being mugged by another player and reacted to protect himself." Zednik's suspension began with Thursday night's game against New Jersey.
