10 Questions Mike Modano discusses move to Dallas, A-Rod and golf
His style and play are as sleek as the Armani suits he wears. Yet, his trademark scruffy face defines his willingness to do whatever it takes to better the Dallas Stars. Mike Modano has been the cornerstone of the Stars franchise since he was drafted first overall in 1988. A proven scorer and former captain, the addition of Brett Hull has made him more of a complete hockey player. And a more confident golfer. 1. Can you compare this Dallas Stars team to the past two that went to the Stanley Cup Finals? I really don't think so. We've had a lot of personnel changes, so it's kind of tough to compare this team with those two other teams. 2. Were you saddened at all when the North Stars moved from Minnesota to Dallas in 1993? A little bit. I loved Minneapolis and the people there. So it was a tough decision for us all. But basically, you have to go with where work takes you. A lot of businesses relocate and you have to accept it and adjust to it. At that time, relocating started to happen a lot in sports. And that's when it's just like a business. 3. It seems the Dallas fans have embraced you all so much and even dethroned the Cowboys as Dallas' favorite team. Over the years, it has been growing. Hockey is an up-and-coming sport in that town. It's fast-paced and exciting and something people have not seen in that city in awhile. 4. I bet the single life is better in Dallas than in Minnesota. [Smirks] Oh, yeah. The is town is good for that, too. There are a lot of fun things to do. I've been there basically year-round for the past seven or eight years and I've met a lot of people outside of hockey. That makes it a lot more fun. 5. Another bachelor with a lot more money, Alex Rodriguez, is invading your town. What kind of impact will he make on the Rangers and on the city of Dallas?
Being a young Hispanic male in that town, he's going to make a huge impact. More fans are going to come out and watch him and the Rangers are going to build their team around him. They will be very offensive this year with him, Raffy [Rafael Palmiero] and Pudge [Ivan Rodriguez] and score lots of runs. It makes it exciting for fans. In the end, most fans know defense wins championships and pitching will eventually be an important part of that team as well. 6. Have you played him in golf yet? Not yet. I just went out with him for dinner that one night [when he visited Texas before he signed] and got to know him a little bit. He's pretty busy now, trying to get situated in Dallas, and getting ready for training camp. I'm sure over time, we'll be able to tee it up. 7. Would it be smart of you to play him for money? Yeah, I think so. I think he'll be able to cover his losses. 8. Does coach Hitchcock allow you all to play during the season? Sometimes when we go to California, we get a couple of days off in between Anaheim and Los Angeles. We're able to go out then and even sometimes in Phoenix. 9. Sounds like your offseason comes at the right time. Are you ready to be as good as Gretzky and Mario ... on the links? No doubt. Dallas is usually a warm climate, so we can play there during the season and year-round. Lemieux and Gretzky are OK, but Brett [Hull] and I can take them on. 10. Sounds like a challenge. Bring them on, we're ready.
