No time to play Avs' Saturday game vs. Swedish champion canceled
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- The Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche's first game in the American Airlines NHL Challenge 2001 against a Swedish team was canceled in the wake of terrorist attacks in the United States, according to news reports Thursday. The game against Swedish champion Djurgarden was scheduled for Saturday at the sold-out Globe Arena. The NHL canceled all of Saturday's preseason games Wednesday, a day after the attacks on New York and Washington D.C. The league will likely decide on the status of Sunday's games Thursday. The NHL offices, located in Manhattan, were closed Wednesday, but expected to reopen Thursday. Representatives of Colorado, the NHL, the NHL Players Association and the International Management Group and EMA of Sweden, which organized the NHL Challenge 2001, called a news conference for later in the day at the Globe Arena. The Avalanche's 20 North American players arrived in the Swedish capital Monday to open training camp. The team's five Europeans, among them Swedish star Peter Forsberg, already were in Stockholm. Colorado also canceled Friday's practice, which would have been open to the public, according to the Swedish news agency TT. Colorado's second game in the NHL Challenge is Sunday at the Globe against Brynas, another Swedish Elite League team. Another game, in Finland against Jokerit of Helsinki, is scheduled for Tuesday, the day before Colorado had planned to end its first overseas visit. Garnet "Ace" Bailey, the Los Angeles Kings director of pro scouting, and Mark Bavis, an amateur scout, were among the 65 people on United Airlines Flight 175 -- the second plane to hit the skyscrapers in New York. The Boeing 767 was scheduled to fly from Boston to Los Angeles.
