Ray to get his day Avalanche to retire Bourque's No. 77 SaturdayPosted: Tuesday November 20, 2001 11:25 PM
DENVER (AP) -- The Colorado Avalanche will retire Ray Bourque's No. 77 before their game against Edmonton on Saturday, and then will auction off autographed jerseys to raise money for families of New York police and firefighters. Bourque played for the Boston Bruins for 21 seasons before being traded to Colorado in 2000. It was with the Avalanche last season that he realized his career-long goal of winning a Stanley Cup. He retired in June after the Avalanche beat the New Jersey Devils in the seventh game of the finals. Bourque's number is the first to be retired since the team moved to Colorado six years ago. The franchise, formerly the Quebec Nordiques, retired the numbers of four players before moving to Denver. The No. 77 jersey Bourque wore for the Bruins was retired in Boston on Oct. 4. Avalanche players will don No. 77 jerseys during the pregame skate-around Saturday. Bourque will sign the jerseys, which will be auctioned by Denver police and firefighters throughout the Pepsi Center concourses. The minimum bid for each jersey will be $500. The single highest bidder will receive a trip for two to accompany the Avalanche to Minnesota on Feb. 7. Proceeds from the auction will go to the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit fund.
