PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Len Barrie scored the go-ahead goal 9:20 into the third period and Trevor Kidd made 39 saves as the Florida Panthers suprised the Philadelphia Flyers, 2-1, despite being outshot by a more than 2-to-1 margin.

Left alone in front, a wide-open Barrie took a centering pass from rookie Denis Shvidki and poked the puck under goaltender Roman Cechmanek's pads. It was the fifth goal of the season for Barrie, who started his career with Philadelphia.

The Flyers outshot the Panthers, 40-19, but missed a chance to climb into fourth place in the Eastern Conference, remaining one point behind idle Buffalo. The team that finishes fourth will have home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

"Trevor Kidd played a hell of a game," Florida coach Duane Sutter said. "He rose to the occasion and I thought it was a real gutsy performance on everybody's behalf. They have been challenged by me a lot in the last 12 hours and I was very happy with the response."

The slumping Flyers were unable to build on Saturday's 1-0 victory over Detroit and dropped to 1-4-1-0 in the last six contests.

"We're not getting that little extra for going to the net for the rebounds," Flyers left wing John LeClair said. "We got to do a better job of getting the second chances on some shots to get some ugly goals."

Kidd was especially tough in the second period, when the Flyers peppered him with 20 shots. But Philadelphia surrendered a shorthanded goal as Pavel Bure scored his 59th on a breakaway at 6:47 to forge a 1-1 tie.

Bure tallied just 78 seconds after defenseman Michal Sykora's power-play goal put the Flyers ahead.

"We had 20 shots in the second period and we didn't get anything," Philadelphia coach Bill Barber said. "It was one of those frustrating games when things didn't go our way. We played with some risk. When you do that, you are going to pay. We had turnovers that were costly to us."

Philadelphia came close to pulling even with 7:28 left in the third, when Daymond Langkow's shot clanged off the left goalpost. But Florida tightened its defense, holding the Flyers to eight shots over the final 20 minutes.

"We played a lot better in the third," Kidd said. "Philadelphia never had many chances to score after we took the lead. In the past, we'd get tied up in our zone trying to protect the lead. But tonight, we played solid and it was nice to see."

After a scoreless first period, the Flyers took advantage of a break to grap the lead as Sykora's centering pass from the right circle deflected off the skate of Florida defenseman Robert Svehla and trickled past Kidd.

But Mark Recchi's turnover inside the Florida blue line led to the tying goal. Rob Niedermayer grabbed the loose puck and fed a breaking Bure. The "Russian Rocket" was stopped on a breakaway in the first period, but he made no mistake this time, snapping a wrist shot between Cechmanek's pads.

"The first breakaway, I thought I had a goal, but Cechmanek stopped it somehow," said Bure, who has two games remaining to reach 60 goals for the third time in his career. "So when I came down this time, I decided to shoot it."

The Flyers have three games remaining, including road contests at Montreal and Buffalo and a home meeting with Pittsburgh.

"(The fourth spot is) still attainable," Barber said. "The ball is in our court. We cannot give up any more points if we want to have the home-ice advantage."

Florida avoided a four-game season sweep against the Flyers, who won the first three meetings by a 13-6 margin.
