DETROIT (Ticker) -- Jarome Iginla scored a power-play goal and added two assists as the Calgary Flames held on for a 4-2 victory that ended the Detroit Red Wings' 19-game regular-season home unbeaten streak.

Calgary scored just two power-play goals in its first three games but struck three times with the extra man to spoil the Red Wings' home opener. Detroit was 17-0-2 in the regular season at Joe Louis Arena since last December 27.

"You look at their lineup and all the names, it's amazing," Iginla said. "But once the game started, we forgot about who we were playing. ... Detroit's a good challenge for us. They're a step up there, so they make the intensity higher."

Dean McAmmond got the Flames' first power-play goal midway through the second period to forge a 1-1 tie. During a two-man advantage, he flipped a rebound over a sprawled Dominik Hasek after the goaltender stopped Iginla's deflection and a shot by defenseman Derek Morris.

"You have to get something on the 5-on-3," Iginla said. "If they kill it off, it pumps them up. If we score, it pumps us up. It's a momentum-shifter."

With 4:34 left in the period and Detroit's Brett Hull in the penalty box for tripping, Hasek made a chest stop on Rob Niedermayer's shot. But the puck glanced off the knee of 27-year-old rookie Scott Nichol and into the net to put Calgary ahead for good.

It was Nichol's first NHL goal.

A blocked shot squirted to Flames defenseman Igor Kravchuk, who beat an out-of-position Hasek 3:50 into the third period to extend the lead to 3-1.

Red-hot Brendan Shanahan answered for the Red Wings, but Iginla capped his three-point night with 6:19 left by finishing off a 2-on-1 with Craig Conroy.

"The last few years, we've been close at the end and our Octobers have been terrible. We've tried to work on that and this year, we're putting up some points," Iginla said.

Hasek made 29 saves but suffered his first loss for Detroit, which opened the season with a pair of road wins.

"You look at all the great players on this team, but it doesn't matter a bit if you're not going to play defense in front of Dominik," Hull said. "He's so good, but he can't stop 2-on-1s and 3-on-2s all night. ... Tonight, we had too many defensive breakdowns. It seems like they were going in 2-on-1 and 3-on-2 all night."

The Red Wings struck first on Kris Draper's goal 12:43 into the opening period. A perfect pass by Igor Larionov split two Flames and found Draper, who flipped a wrist shot between goaltender Roman Turek's pads.

But the game turned in the second period, when Detroit defenseman Mathieu Dandenault was penalized for elbowing at 8:16 and teammate Steve Yzerman followed him to the penalty box 22 seconds later.

"I like the two referees. I like them eliminating dirty hits and dirty plays, but you can't make calls from 30 or 40 feet away," said Shanahan, who shares the league lead with five goals. "It's not 100 percent the referees' fault. If the players continue to (dive). One was a trip behind the play. That's not a 5-on-3 call."

"I think the guys just got frustrated with the hooking and holding," added Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman. "I guess we have to do more of it ourselves. That's the only way you can look at the game. ... We had no momentum. We got taken out of the game in the second with all those penalties."

Turek made 24 saves for his third win in four starts, during which he has allowed just four goals.

"The guys played incredible hockey tonight," Turek said. "It was fun to watch it from behind. When you score four goals against a team like that, especially in their building, you have to play very well."
