DETROIT (Ticker) -- Luc Robitaille scored the go-ahead goal against his former team and Scotty Bowman recorded his 1,200th win as the Detroit Red Wings held on for their fifth straight victory, 3-2 over the Los Angeles Kings.

The second-leading scorer in Kings' history, Robitaille signed with the Red Wings as a free agent on July 5. With 4:19 left in the second period and Detroit on the power play, he deflected Brendan Shanahan's shot past goaltender Felix Potvin to extend his goal-scoring streak to five games.

"It was pretty special," Robitaille said. "It's weird to play against guys you played with for three or four years. I really wanted to win this. And then to get the game-winner, I didn't think it would be the last one."

"That's what Luc does. He deflects pucks into the net," Kings coach Andy Murray said. "He's very good at that. We know that. Our concern is that we gave them the shot from the blue line that they shouldn't have had and allowed Luc to get his stick on the puck."

Dominik Hasek made it stand up as the game-winner as the Red Wings improved to 7-1-0.

"Little by little, we're getting to know each other on the ice and we're finding ways to win," Robitaille said. "It's early, but it gives you a little bit of a cushion. Two points in the beginning are as good as two points at the end."

Bowman moved to 1,200-563-304 in a coaching career that began in 1967-68, the same season the Kings joined the NHL. Despite taking off parts of eight years along the way, he has 138 more wins than the Los Angeles franchise.

"I didn't pay any attention to how many wins we had before we started. It's 1,000 and something," Bowman said. "And every time you get near 100, I guess it's called a milestone. I did pass it before with the playoffs. Sometimes they count them, something they don't."

Shanahan picked up a pair of assists and has a point in all eight games this season. He leads the NHL in scoring with eight goals and six assists.

Glen Murray and Craig Johnson scored for the Kings, who erased an early two-goal deficit but were beaten in their first meeting since eliminating the Red Wings in six games in last season's Western Conference quarterfinals.

"We knew they always start strong. We shouldn't allow that to happen," Andy Murray said. "We battled back into it and had ample opportunities in the third period, but Hasek was very good."

Detroit took the lead 41 seconds into the game. Potvin stopped shots by Kris Draper and Shanahan, who tracked down the rebound and threw it into the slot. Sergei Fedorov trailed the play and whipped a one-timer past the goalie for his fifth goal.

Brett Hull made it 2-0 less than four minutes later, taking a centering pass from Steve Yzerman and beating Potvin from the edge of the right faceoff circle.

Glen Murray halved the deficit just 20 seconds later, flipping a rebound over Hasek after the goalie sprawled to stop a shot by Johnson.

With 6:27 left in the opening period, Johnson tied it with his first goal since December 26. Murray broke through three defenders and slid the puck to the left circle, where Johnson wristed a shot by Hasek.

"We battled back and tied it, but we have to play better in the first period," Glen Murray said. "Hasek played good. We got the momentum after we tied it up, but he made a couple of good saves."
