DETROIT (Ticker) -- Sergei Fedorov and Tomas Holmstrom each scored power-play goals as the Detroit Red Wings posted their sixth straight victory, a 4-1 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers. Detroit struck first after Oilers center Marty Reasoner was whistled for high sticking with 8:23 left in the first period. The Red Wings worked the puck around on the power play to Fedorov, who buried a slap shot from the right point past Oilers goaltender Tommy Salo. Fedorov has scored at least one goal in each of the last five games and owns a six-game points streak. "I think it was important to start well and it was important to continue that momentum," Fedorov said. "We had to really be patient with the cycle until we got the chance to strip the puck off of them." After Jason Smith was called for his second roughing penalty with 8:49 left in the second period, the Red Wings again took full advantage on the power play. Brendan Shanahan's shot from the left point was deflected by Holmstrom past Salo for a 2-0 lead. Shanahan's 15 points lead the NHL and he has points in all nine games for Detroit. Salo felt that the goal should have been disallowed. "I felt he (Holmstrom) was in the crease all the way," Salo said. "It made my job much tougher on both to see the puck." Detroit outshot Edmonton, 14-2, in the first period. "We spent a lot of time in our zone but I thought we played well in our zone," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "We did a good job of identifying our coverages. They shot the puck from everywhere. It wasn't indicative that we got outshot 14-2. It seemed like they had a lot more opportunities but we kept them to the outside." The Red Wings also accomplished something they could not last season in defeating Edmonton. They were swept by the Oilers in all three meetings in 2000-01. "It's important we get back in the position where we can play against this team well because a couple times the year before last year and last year we needed points and it was tough to take off of them," Fedorov said. "They play a very tough game, a very fast game, very aggressive at the offensive zone." Luc Robitaille and Boyd Devereaux added third-period goals to give the Wings a 4-0 lead. Robitaille, who has goals in his last six games, tipped in a pass from Igor Larianov 2:28 into the period. Later, Matthieu Dandenault found Devereaux across the ice and the center beat Salo with 11:47 left. Rookie Pavel Datsyuk picked up his first NHL point with an assist on Devereaux's goal, which caused Edmonton to pull a frustrated Salo in favor of rookie Ty Conklin. "It was a great play by Dandy," Devereaux said. "If I hadn't put that in, I'd be upset with myself. I'll take that play any day." The Oilers averted the shutout with 5:15 left when Sean Brown scored past Dominik Hasek, who was screened on the play by Mike Grier. Hasek, who improved to 7-1-0, was seeking his first shutout as a member of the Red Wings. Hasek turned in one of the game's most spectacular plays when he batted away a shot by Edmonton defenseman Eric Brewer from in close in the first minute of the second period. Hasek stopped 17 shots in the second period. "He's a fantastic goaltender," Oilers center Todd Marchant said. "He seems to make the unbelievable save here and there. I thought we had a lot of opportunities to get the puck past him but we couldn't. There are going to be games like that when you go against a guy like Dominik Hasek."
