NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Goaltenders Manny Legace and Dominik Hasek combined for 19 saves to help the Detroit Red Wings hang on for a 1-0 win over the Nashville Predators. Legace stopped 15 shots but left on a stretcher late in the second period after colliding with a pair of players. Hasek stepped in and made four saves over the final 25 minutes. Legace was involved in a collision with teammate Fredrik Olausson and Nashville defenseman Kimmo Timonen, who tangled up in front of the net, lost their balance and fell on the goalie's head. "One of their guys -- I don't know who the (heck) it was -- tripped and lost his balance, causing the big pile-up," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. Legace was taken to Baptist Hospital for precautionary neck X-rays and is being kept overnight for observation. Defenseman Steve Duchesne scored the game's only goal at 2:35 of the second period. Sergei Fedorov sent a pass from behind the net to the slot, where Duchesne put a wrist shot between Mike Dunham's pads. "It kind of handcuffed me," Dunham said. "My feet got caught together when I was going down and I just missed it. It's my fault. I'll take the blame for that one. One mistake was the difference in the game." Dunham recorded 32 saves, including 10 in the final period, to keep the Predators close. He stopped Fedorov on a breakaway with 14 minutes to play and fended off a goalmouth scramble at 2:36 of the third period. Dunham also turned away a point-blank shot by Steve Yzerman with 40 seconds to play. But Hasek was equally as good in the third period, with the help of the Red Wings' defense, and preserved the team's first shutout of the season. Martin Erat had a chance to tie the game with 1:46 left. Erat pulled Hasek out of the net as he attempted to score on a wraparound, but defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom slid along the right side of the net to block the shot. "When we have a 1-0 lead going into the third, we wanted to control the tempo," Lidstrom said. "Nashville got up-tempo a little but didn't get many chances." Detroit kept the pressure in the Predators' zone, forcing Dunham to stay in the net until the final 10 seconds, when Nashville finally put an extra attacker on the ice. "We had some chances to tie it up," Nashville's Scott Walker said. "We would have liked to be playing more in their end, especially in the last three minutes. We worked hard enough to tie it up, but we just didn't get any breaks. It just didn't work out for us tonight." The Red Wings improved to an NHL-best 9-2-0 this season -- 4-0 on the road. "Detroit is a high-skill team," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "There aren't many holes on their team. They shut us down pretty well in the third." The Predators were involved in their 10th 1-0 game as a franchise (2-7-0-1).
