CHICAGO (Ticker) -- It's taken seven years, but the Chicago Blackhawks finally are establishing a home-ice advantage at the United Center. Michael Nylander and Igor Korolev scored 69 seconds apart to cap a three-goal first period as the Blackhawks remained unbeaten at home and handed the Detroit Red Wings their first road loss of the season, 5-4. Chicago Stadium used to be one of the NHL's most imposing arenas. Since moving across Madison Street to the United Center in January 1995, however, the Blackhawks have had a winning home record just twice in six seasons. But they built a four-goal lead midway through the second period and held on to defeat their long-time rivals, improving to 6-0-2 at home. Last season, Chicago did not record its sixth home win until January 3. Kyle Calder's power-play goal at 8:48 started the Blackhawks' big first period. Steve Thomas and rookie Aaron Downey scored in the second as Chicago chased six-time Vezina Trophy winner -- and former Blackhawk -- Dominik Hasek. The Red Wings rallied behind their potent power play and climbed within 5-4 on Luc Robitaille's second goal of the game with 8:20 left in the third period. But they could not get the equalizer and failed to match the 1940-41 Toronto Maple Leafs and 1985-86 Philadelphia Flyers by winning their first seven road games.
