PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Sergei Fedorov collected a goal and an assist and Brendan Shanahan tallied two assists to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. Fedorov scored the eventual game-winner 55 seconds into the third period by firing a slap shot from the right faceoff circle that beat goaltender Sean Burke high to the glove side. "We had the one goal going into the final period, scored quickly twice," Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman said. "That gave us some room for error, and then our defense took over." Fedorov also picked up a secondary assist on defenseman Fredrik Olausson's shorthanded goal which gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 13:19 of the second period. Shanahan and Olausson broke out in a 2-on-1, and Olausson scored on a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Burke on the far, stick-side. Phoenix leads the league in shorthanded goals allowed with four. "Tonight we showed them a little too much respect," Burke said. "Obviously they've got a great group of players, a great veteran team. But as old as they are, we could have come out with a little more energy like we have had in other games. If we did that, it could have been a different story." Dominik Hasek finished with 16 saves and improved to 9-3-0. He blanked the Coyotes on 11 shots through the first two periods before a goal by Brad May spoiled his shutout bid early in the third period. May charged the net to pick up a loose rebound and put it between Hasek's pads, cutting Detroit's lead to two. "I can't get too excited about that goal," May said. "We were already down by three." "We played great defensively," Hasek said. "They only had three or four real chances. When you hold that team to maybe 15 or 17 shots, you're doing your job. The 'D' was great. I didn't have to work much." Kirk Maltby helped seal the win by scoring early in the third period, making it 3-0. The Coyotes failed to take advantage of four power-play chances and had just six shots in the final period. "The first two periods they were great defensively," Phoenix coach Bob Francis said. "But we spent a lot of time in our end. The second, we executed without coverage, but you don't get many scoring chances against them. But it's tough to get chances against them." Shanahan nearly recorded an empty-net goal with less than a second to play, but two video reviews showed the puck went in after the final buzzer. Detroit's Brent Gilchrist left the game late in the second second period after he was hit in the face by the stick of an unknown Coyote and did not return. May received a double minor for high-sticking for the incident. Phoenix lost for just the second time at home this season but is 0-3-1 in its last four games. The Red Wings have won five of their last six games. "I think we could have played better," Shanahan said. "We had a couple of 2-on-1s that we didn't capitalize on. Let's face it, we're a veteran team, we know what we need to do and how to go about it."
