DETROIT (Ticker) -- Not even a big third period could end the Carolina Hurricanes' struggles at Joe Louis Arena. Steve Yzerman set up the game's first three goals as the Detroit Red Wings built a big lead and held on for their 11th straight home win over the Hurricanes, 4-3. The Carolina-Hartford franchise fell to 0-10-0-1 in Detroit since November 14, 1989. But the Hurricanes, who entered with a six-game overall unbeaten streak, did not go quietly. Defenseman Niclas Wallin and Martin Gelinas scored 31 seconds apart midway through the final period and a power-play goal by Bates Battaglia got Carolina within 4-3 with 2:32 remaining. The Hurricanes pulled goaltender Arturs Irbe for an extra attacker in the final minute, but Dominik Hasek stopped their best chance when he snared Jeff O'Neill's backhanded chip from the left side with 31 seconds left. Sergei Fedorov opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period and Brendan Shanahan, Tomas Holmstrom and Mathieu Dandenault tallied in the second for the Red Wings, who recorded their league-leading 10th one-goal win.
