COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- In a battle of exceptional goaltending, Ron Tugnutt finally blinked.

Luc Robitaille fired a slap shot past Tugnutt with 43 seconds left in overtime as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the Columbus Blue Jackets, 1-0, for their fifth straight win.

Manny Legace stopped all 38 shots he faced and extended his personal unbeaten streak to 18 games (16-0-2). Dominik Hasek's backup also recorded a 1-0 win over Nashville on October 27 and is 6-0-0 this season.

"Tugger played great tonight," Legace said. "I thought he played phenomenal and kept us off the board. This feels pretty good. They played unbelievable. It was a fun game to be in."

Tugnutt made 33 saves but could not stop Robitaille's shot, which came on the power play off a feed from defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. The goal was Robitaille's 13th of the season, third game-winner and came 78 seconds after defenseman Mattias Timander was penalized for slashing.

"It went on the left side," Robitaille said. "We moved the puck a couple times quick and when it came to me, I knew if I put it high, it would go in. So I did. It's good to get the win."

"They had the normal setup with a guy in front, and I didn't know where the shot was going to come from, up top or middle," Tugnutt said. "They were setting up both guys on the side, and both guys on the side shoot the puck real well, so I couldn't cheat either way. It went to Luc's side and he made a good shot."

The Red Wings could not convert either of their power-play chances in the third period, their only two of the game. Tugnutt stopped 13 shots in the period to give him 32 through the end of regulation.

Detroit right wing Brett Hull received a major penalty and a game misconduct 8:40 into the second period for elbowing Tyler Wright. But Columbus could not convert on the subsequent five-minute power play.

Columbus set a team record for shots in any period with 23 in the first but could not get anything past Legace. Detroit killed all three Blue Jackets' power plays, including a two-man advantage in the opening period.

The Red Wings avoided their first tie of the season and improved to a league-best 19-3-0-1.

"Legace looked in command," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "We needed him tonight on the penalty-kill. And on Robitaille's goal, we were hoping the puck would come to him because he gets the puck on the net. That's usually as long a range as he shoots from."

Columbus has lost three straight.

"Both goalies played really well," Blue Jackets coach Dave King said. "I thought Legace had a real good game, he looked solid. I don't think Dominik could've played much better. The young goalie did a really good job for them tonight."
