EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- Steve Yzerman put two streaks to rest with one goal.

Yzerman scored the winning goal late in the third period as the Detroit Red Wings ended a season-high four-game winless skid with a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

The Red Wings' captain also snapped his personal eight-game goal drought when he tipped in Chris Chelios' slap shot with 5:24 to play.

"Two weeks ago, all the talk was about cutting down on goals against," Yzerman said. "Everyone was saying that we scored enough, but suddenly it dried up on us. We just got enough goals and stopped enough of their chances to win tonight and that's something that we can take with us from here."

Prior to their skid, the Red Wings had not gone at least two straight games without a win and they were held to two or fewer goals in just six games. During the winless streak, Detroit was outscored, 11-3.

"They had a lot of chances where pucks bounced away from Dom (Hasek) and we just managed to get a stick in the way," Chelios said. "We've made some subtle adjustment and we're playing a little more passively. We've stopped running around and I think its been a good move for us. To hold that team to one goal is a pretty good accomplishment."

Boyd Devereaux, Edmonton's first pick in the 1996 draft, picked up a secondary assist on the play and also scored just under seven minutes into the second period to knot the game.

Goaltender Tommy Salo managed to stop Nicklas Lidtrom's slap shot from the point, but he directed the rebound to the right side of the net, where Devereax wristed it in.

"I just kind of rolled to the net and I don't know if my check (from the Edmonton defenseman) stumbled or tried to switch, but I got there all alone and the rebound ended up right on my stick," Devereaux said.

Hasek made 22 saves to earn his 16th win of the season.

The Oilers took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Anson Carter tallied his team-leading 17th goal. After skating across the blue line together, Carter left a drop pass for Mike Comrie in the slot. Comrie threw the puck toward the net and Hasek pushed the puck to his right, where Carter tapped it in.

But Carter's goal was the only offense Edmonton could muster as its winless streak was extended to four games.

"The one thing we had been doing is getting overtime loss points and points from ties," Oilers coach Craig McTavish said. "Tonight we ended up with nothing. It's a feeling we don't like and we've got to pull ourselves off the mat and get things turned around."

Of the Oilers' six third-period shots, five came after Yzerman's goal. Edmonton also failed on two power play opportunities in the final 4 1/2 minutes.

"When you're in a funk like this, you need everybody going and sometimes it's still not enough," Carter said. "We did what we wanted to do, put pressure on their defense, created some turnovers and got some chances. But they've got a pretty good goalie and he stopped enough of our shots for them to win."
