PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Michal Handzus scored 41 seconds into the second period and the Philadelphia Flyers held on for their sixth straight win, 3-2 over the Detroit Red Wings. Handzus also assisted on rookie Radovan Somik's second goal of the season that tied it, 1-1, at 7:46 of the first period. It came 15 seconds after rookie Henrik Zetterberg put the Red Wings ahead with his first goal in 15 games. Defenseman Eric Weinrich carried the puck into the Detroit zone and fired a slap shot from the point that Handzus tipped past goaltender Curtis Joseph. "It was a lucky goal for me," Handzus said. "I just kept the stick on the ice and Weinrich took a great shot." Jeremy Roenick snapped the tie with 1:52 left in the first. After Red Wings center Boyd Devereaux lost control of the puck, Roenick skated past former Chicago Blackhawks teammate Chris Chelios and took a wrist shot that rolled off Joseph's blocker before falling into the net. "It was a great atmosphere out there," Roenick said. "The fans were fantastic. Obviously, on a day like today, everybody's jacked up. So it was even more special." Roman Cechmanek stopped 13 of 14 shots over the first two periods and finished with 21 saves to improve to 15-9-5. Cechmanek allowed Brett Hull's goal 62 seconds into the third period but made a glove save on a bouncing wrist shot by the prolific right wing with 45.9 seconds remaining to preserve the win. "Everyone knows we have been playing much better over the last few games," Cechmanek said. "We knew this would be a tough game and we came out hard in the first period. We played smart." "I don't think this is a game that comes down to chances, I think it comes down to what team wants it more and what team plays like they want it more." said Hull, who is three goals shy of 700. "Until it gets desperate in the third period, lately we haven't seen any of that. We need some better leadership and some better play out of people or that's the way it's going to be." The Flyers, who also won six in a row from October 24-November 5, entered moved four points ahead of second-place New Jersey in the Atlantic Division. Detroit, which is in first place in the Central Division, completed a 2-2-0 road trip on which both wins came in overtime. "I thought we had some good chances, especially in the first period," Red Wings coach Dave Lewis. "We had chances, we just didn't put them in." |
