EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Edmonton Oilers' newcomers were given a crash course on the rivalry with the Dallas Stars. Two of them were more than prepared.

Radek Dvorak and Brad Isbister scored their first goals as Oilers and Ethan Moreau capped a three-goal, third-period outburst to lift Edmonton to a 4-3 victory over the Stars.

While most viewed the trades of Anson Carter and defenseman Janne Niinimaa as nothing more than salary dumps, the Oilers had other things in mind as they geared up for the stretch drive, fighting to hang on to the last Western Conference playoff berth.

Two seasons removed from a 31-goal campaign, Dvorak scored in the second period, getting his first goal since being acquired from the New York Rangers at Tuesday's trade deadline. Isbister, picked up from the New York Islanders, added his first tally as an Oiler and fueling the fire between the Western rivals by delivering a crushing check on defenseman Darryl Sydor that led to a wild melee in the second.

The teams that have met in the playoffs five of the past six years - and could collide again this year - completed the intense contest by combining for three goals in a 43-second span in the third.

Shawn Horcoff and former Oiler Jason Arnott traded tallies before Moreau converted a pass from rookie Fernando Pisani with 8:36 remaining to give the Oilers a 4-3 advantage.

The victory increased Edmonton's lead over ninth-place Nashville to eight points while pulling the Oilers within four of Minnesota and Anaheim.
