NEW YORK (AP) -- Red Bullet was fifth and surrounded by horses with a quarter-mile remaining. By the time he reached the finish, the lightly raced, unbeaten chestnut colt was in front and on target for the Kentucky Derby.

"He was really getting bumped around, but he fought his way through it," trainer Joe Orseno said after Red Bullet carried Alex Solis to a half-length victory over fast-closing Aptitude in the mile Gotham on Sunday at Aqueduct.

Orseno said Frank Stronach's Red Bullet, unbeaten in three starts, all this year, will next start in the 1 1-8-mile Wood Memorial on April 15 at Aqueduct. Then, if all goes well, it will be on to the Kentucky Derby on May 6. The only Derby winner not to have raced as a 2-year-old was Apollo in 1882.

"He's a real professional," said Solis, who rode Red Bullet for the first time because Jerry Bailey opted to ride 2-year-old champion Anees in the San Felipe on Sunday at Santa Anita. "He relaxed off the pace fine and took dirt well."

Red Bullet shot out of a pack and into the lead with a little less than an eighth-mile remaining to earn $120,000 in his stakes debut and pay $4.10, $3.10 and $2.60. His time for the mile under 113 pounds was 1:34 2-5.

Aptitude, 113, ridden by Brice Blanc, paid $6 and $4.40 in his fourth career start and his first since Jan. 3.

"I'd rather get beat by a neck (actually a half-length) than in the Kentucky Derby," said trainer Bobby Frankel, adding that Aptitude next will start in the Wood Memorial.

Performing Magic, 113, ridden by Garrett Gomez, returned $4.60 after finishing four lengths behind Red Bullet and three-quarters of a length ahead of Fight for Ally.

Completing the order of finish were Appeal Danger, Acres, Max's Pal, Fajardo and Gangsta Rap.
