Sky Mesa out of Breeders' Cup Juvenile

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Illinois (AP) -- Early favorite Sky Mesa won't race in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile because of a right front ankle injury.

The two-year-old colt's injury developed during the night and was discovered Friday, a day before the World Thoroughbred Championships at Arlington Park. Sky Mesa is trained by Kentucky-based John Ward and his wife, Donna.

"It was a little tense this morning," Ward said. "You fear the worst and hope for the best, but I think we dodged a bullet. The main concern is to get him ready for Kentucky Derby consideration."

Ward said preliminary X-rays showed a soft filling in Sky Mesa's ankle, rather than a more serious sprain or cracked cannon bone, which Ward initially feared. The colt will have a nuclear scan in the next seven-to-10 days to further diagnose the injury.

The Juvenile would have pitted Sky Mesa and Vindication, both undefeated in three career starts. Vindication is the early second choice for the US$1 million race.

Sky Mesa's absence reduced the field to 13 for the 1 1-8-mile race.

Edgar Prado, who was to ride Sky Mesa, still has six mounts in eight Breeders' Cup races.
